ReadingHow Much Does Embedded Firmware Development Cost in India?

Embedded firmware is where hardware becomes behaviour.

The PCB may be correct. The sensors may be good. But the product still fails if firmware cannot handle timing, power, communication, updates and faults.

What firmware work includes

Firmware is often underestimated because it is invisible.

Typical work includes:

  • board support package and startup code
  • peripheral drivers
  • sensor integration
  • state machines
  • RTOS tasks, queues and timers
  • communication protocols
  • local storage
  • power management
  • bootloader and OTA
  • diagnostics and logs
  • production test firmware
  • hardware bring-up support

For connected products, firmware sits between Electronics PCB Design and Cloud and IoT.

Why firmware cost varies

The cost depends on how much real-world behaviour the firmware must handle.

Firmware scopeTypical effort driver
Board bring-upClocks, pins, peripherals, first sensor reads
Driver developmentDatasheets, timing, calibration, error handling
RTOS applicationTasks, queues, memory, concurrency, watchdogs
BLE/Wi-Fi/cellularPairing, provisioning, reconnects, network failure
OTA updateBootloader, rollback, image validation, recovery
Production firmwareTest modes, serialisation, calibration, logs

A demo can ignore bad networks. A product cannot.

BSP and driver work

Board support and drivers are the first layer.

If the board uses common MCU platforms and well-supported sensors, this stage can move quickly. If the design uses unusual parts, strict timing, low power states or custom protocols, the effort grows.

Datasheets tell you what should happen. Bring-up tells you what actually happens.

RTOS or bare metal?

Bare-metal firmware can work well for simple products. RTOS becomes useful when the product has multiple concurrent jobs: sensing, communication, storage, UI, power management and OTA.

RTOS adds structure, but it also adds design decisions. Priorities, stack sizes, shared resources and timing must be handled carefully.

Delighteck works across embedded firmware and technologies such as Zephyr RTOS where the product needs a scalable firmware architecture.

Connectivity adds cost

BLE, Wi-Fi and cellular are not just checkboxes.

BLE needs pairing, services, characteristics, phone compatibility and reconnect behaviour. Wi-Fi needs provisioning, credentials, weak-network handling and retries. Cellular needs modem commands, SIM states, signal quality, data usage and longer failure windows.

OTA and diagnostics

OTA looks like a feature. It is also insurance.

Without OTA, every firmware bug in the field can become a physical service problem. Without logs, support teams guess. Without recovery design, a failed update can brick a device.

This is why production firmware costs more than demo firmware.

Testing effort

Firmware testing is not only unit tests.

It includes bench testing, long-duration runs, power cycle tests, network loss, sensor faults, update interruption, memory use, timing, watchdog behaviour and production test modes.

Indicative firmware budgets

Firmware scopeIndicative budget
Board bring-up and simple logicRs 2-6 lakh
Sensor/device firmware with basic protocolRs 5-12 lakh
Connected firmware with BLE/Wi-Fi/cellularRs 8-20 lakh
Production firmware with OTA, diagnostics and test modesRs 15-30 lakh+
Regulated or high-reliability firmwareRs 25 lakh+

These are planning ranges. Existing code quality, hardware readiness and test access can move the budget in either direction.

How to make firmware estimates better

Share the hardware details, MCU, sensors, communication needs, power source, expected update method and failure expectations.

Also share what already exists. A clean codebase can reduce effort. A prototype full of blocking delays, global state and undocumented assumptions may need refactoring before new features are safe.
