BLE vs Wi-Fi vs Cellular: Choosing Connectivity for a Real Product
Connectivity should be selected from product constraints—not from familiarity with a radio.

Start with the operating environment
BLE, Wi-Fi and cellular solve different coverage, power, bandwidth and infrastructure problems. A wearable that communicates through a phone has different constraints from an industrial gateway deployed in the field.
When BLE fits
Bluetooth Low Energy is well suited to short-range, power-sensitive products, provisioning flows and devices that can use a phone or gateway as the bridge to the internet.
When Wi-Fi fits
Wi-Fi can be a strong choice where local infrastructure is available and the product needs higher throughput or direct IP connectivity. Power consumption and onboarding experience need careful design.
When cellular fits
Cellular is useful when the product must operate independently of customer networks or across distributed field deployments. Coverage, module cost, SIM/eSIM operations, power and data usage become part of the product architecture.
The practical answer is often hybrid
Many real products combine technologies: BLE for local setup, cellular for backhaul, GNSS for location and cloud connectivity for operations. Architecture should be evaluated end to end.
