Cellular IoT is attractive because it removes dependency on customer Wi-Fi.
It also adds a new set of costs: modem, antenna, SIM, data plan, certification, power design, firmware complexity and field diagnostics.
Where cellular cost comes from
Cellular cost has two sides.
First is product development cost: electronics, firmware, antenna, enclosure, cloud and testing.
Second is operating cost: SIM, data, platform fees, support and replacement.
| Cost area | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Modem/module | LTE Cat 1, Cat M1, NB-IoT and 4G modules differ in cost and capability |
| SIM/data plan | Recurring cost depends on usage, region and provider |
| Antenna | Placement and enclosure affect signal quality |
| Firmware | Modem state handling, reconnects, retries and diagnostics |
| Power | Cellular current peaks can break weak power designs |
| Certification | RF and product-specific requirements may apply |
| Cloud | Message frequency affects AWS IoT or backend cost |
Cellular is not just Wi-Fi with a SIM
Wi-Fi products usually assume local infrastructure. Cellular products carry their own network path.
That helps in remote assets, industrial sites, logistics, outdoor equipment and installations where users cannot be trusted to configure Wi-Fi.
But cellular networks have their own failure modes. Signal can be weak. SIMs can be inactive. Data plans can expire. Roaming can behave differently. Towers can be congested. Antenna placement can quietly ruin the product.
Modem and antenna decisions
Choosing the modem is partly technical and partly commercial.
You need to consider supported regions, network technology, module availability, firmware support, certifications, power profile, interface, antenna options and lifecycle.
The antenna is not a decorative part. It is part of the radio system.
Data usage and reporting interval
A device that sends a few readings per day has a very different operating cost from one that sends data every few seconds.
The payload also matters. Verbose JSON, frequent heartbeats, logs and retry storms can increase usage. Firmware should treat data as a design constraint.
For cloud-side cost, read AWS IoT cost for 1,000 devices.
Power can become the hidden cost
Cellular modems can draw high current during transmission. If the power supply is weak, the device may reset exactly when it tries to connect.
Battery-powered cellular products need careful sleep design, wake-up strategy, network attach behaviour and retry limits. A bad retry strategy can drain the battery faster than the actual sensing task.
Indicative development budgets
| Cellular scope | Indicative development budget |
|---|---|
| Cellular feasibility test | Rs 3-8 lakh |
| Cellular prototype with cloud | Rs 8-18 lakh |
| Battery-powered cellular product | Rs 15-35 lakh |
| Production cellular device with enclosure, OTA and diagnostics | Rs 25-60 lakh+ |
These ranges do not include ongoing SIM or data fees. They also do not include certification lab costs unless explicitly scoped.
When cellular makes sense
Cellular is worth considering when:
- devices are installed across many customer sites
- Wi-Fi setup would create support pain
- assets are outdoors or mobile
- the product must work without local IT support
- gateway infrastructure is not practical
It may be overkill when devices are always near a phone, gateway or reliable local network.
