ReadingHow Much Does an IoT Gateway Cost to Develop?

An IoT gateway looks like a box that moves data from one side to another.

That is the simple version. The real work is deciding what happens when one side is noisy, slow, offline, misconfigured or installed badly.

First decide what kind of gateway it is

Gateway is a broad word.

One product may scan nearby BLE sensors and forward readings to the cloud. Another may sit in an electrical panel, read Modbus from machines, buffer data during internet outages and expose diagnostics to a technician.

Those two products should not have the same estimate.

Gateway typeTypical useCost driver
BLE to cloud gatewayWearables, sensors, medical peripheralsBLE stability, phone-free operation, cloud provisioning
Modbus gatewayIndustrial meters, PLCs, machinesRegister mapping, noise, isolation, installation workflow
CAN gatewayAutomotive, battery systems, equipmentBus timing, decoding, logging, ruggedness
Linux gatewayEdge apps, local UI, container workloadsOS maintenance, security updates, storage, recovery
Cellular gatewayRemote assets, no local Wi-FiModem handling, SIMs, antenna, data usage, power

MCU gateway or Linux gateway?

An MCU gateway can be cheaper, lower power and simpler to maintain. It is a good fit when the job is focused: read data, apply light logic, send messages and recover reliably.

A Linux gateway makes sense when you need richer local processing, multiple services, files, containerised workloads, local database, complex networking or an on-device UI. It also brings OS updates, boot reliability, storage corruption risk and security maintenance.

Protocol work is where estimates move

A gateway with one clean protocol is straightforward. A gateway that must handle BLE, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, CAN, RS485, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and cellular is a different project.

Protocol work includes more than parsing bytes. It includes timeouts, retries, reconnects, device discovery, mapping, diagnostics and human-friendly error reporting.

Cloud connection and OTA

For cloud-connected gateways, the cost is shaped by message design.

How often does it report? How large is the payload? Does it send raw samples or aggregated summaries? Does the cloud need device shadows, command topics, remote configuration and alert rules?

OTA is also important. A gateway is often installed in places where physical access is inconvenient. If firmware or software cannot be updated safely, every bug becomes a site visit.

Enclosure and installation matter

Gateway cost is not only electronics and code.

Industrial gateways may need DIN rail mounting, screw terminals, labelled connectors, surge protection, isolation, thermal planning and a serviceable enclosure. Outdoor gateways may need sealing, cable glands, antenna placement and environmental checks.

This is where a desk prototype can mislead the team.

Indicative gateway budgets

Gateway scopeIndicative budget
Protocol proof of conceptRs 4-8 lakh
BLE/Wi-Fi/cloud prototypeRs 6-15 lakh
Industrial protocol gatewayRs 12-30 lakh
Cellular gateway with OTA and bufferingRs 18-45 lakh
Production gateway with enclosure, test and certification planningRs 30-60 lakh+

These ranges are planning numbers. Quantity, certification, environmental requirements and protocol complexity can change them quickly.
