BLE product development cost is often misunderstood.
The radio is low power. The product is not automatically simple.
Pairing, reconnection, phone compatibility, firmware state, battery life, enclosure and RF behaviour can take more effort than the first demo suggests.
The mobile app is part of the BLE system
A BLE device does not exist alone. The phone app is part of the product.
On paper, pairing looks like a few screens. In reality, the app must handle permissions, scanning, connection timeouts, firmware versions, GATT changes, background behaviour and different phone models.
| BLE work area | What changes cost |
|---|---|
| GATT design | Services, characteristics, versioning, future compatibility |
| Firmware | Advertising, connection parameters, power modes, OTA |
| Mobile app | Permissions, scan flow, pairing, reconnects, user feedback |
| RF design | Module, antenna, enclosure, human body effects |
| Testing | Android/iOS versions, phones, distance, battery and retries |
Custom hardware or BLE module?
Using a BLE module can reduce development risk. It may cost more per unit, but it often simplifies RF and certification planning.
Chip-down BLE design can make sense at volume or when size and BOM are critical. It needs stronger RF layout, antenna tuning and test planning.
Battery life is a system decision
Battery life is not only the battery size.
It depends on advertising interval, connection interval, sensor sampling, sleep current, wake-up behaviour, data transfer size, retries and user workflow.
If the app keeps reconnecting badly, the device pays for it. If firmware advertises too aggressively, the battery pays for it. If the enclosure detunes the antenna, retries increase.
What can go wrong?
BLE failures are often intermittent. That makes them frustrating.
The product may work on one Android phone and fail on another. It may connect during testing but fail after the phone sleeps. It may pair once but not reconnect cleanly. It may work outside the enclosure but lose range inside the final housing.
Indicative BLE budgets
| BLE product scope | Indicative budget |
|---|---|
| BLE feasibility demo | Rs 3-7 lakh |
| BLE sensor prototype with app | Rs 6-15 lakh |
| Custom BLE hardware and firmware | Rs 12-25 lakh |
| Production BLE product with OTA, app hardening and RF checks | Rs 20-35 lakh+ |
These are planning ranges. Medical, wearable and high-volume products may need more testing and documentation.
How to reduce BLE risk
- Decide the pairing flow early.
- Keep GATT design versioned and simple.
- Test on multiple Android and iOS devices.
- Measure power on real hardware, not only from datasheets.
- Keep OTA in the architecture if devices will be shipped.
- Check RF behaviour with the real enclosure.
